On the 1st Monday of May, Gigi Hadid graced the Met Gala 2023 red carpet wearing a sheer Givenchy gown with an embellished train. The supermodel styled the look with little black gloves and pearls, which was a pitch-perfect match for this year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
The supermodel was joined by the French fashion house’s creative director, Matthew Williams. The designer broke down Hadid’s look during his red carpet interview with Emma Chamberlain, sharing that it was “inspired by some of Karl’s favourite things.” He cited how specific design details, like fans and orchids, were incorporated into the look to reflect the things Lagerfeld loved the most while he was alive.
“Karl was always looking forward and not so nostalgic,” said Williams, “so we wanted to make something new, and that also spoke to the craftsmanship of the atelier of Givenchy.”
“I also think that Karl would have loved this feather floral embroidery situation,” said Hadid during their red carpet interview. She, like many of the night’s attendees, had a personal relationship with Lagerfeld before his death in 2019. Yesterday, the model took to Instagram to pay her respects to the late designer ahead of the gala. “I feel so lucky to have experienced this legend,” Hadid expressed online, adding, “he is so very missed… I can’t wait to see all the fashion houses pay tribute to him creatively.”
The Met Gala comes off the heels of Hadid’s stint as a co-host on Netflix’s programme, Next in Fashion. During her red carpet interview, the supermodel shared how The Met Gala “is the intense version” of the show. “It’s really getting designers to think outside the box,” Hadid shared. “It’s so fun to see everyone’s interpretation of something,” she added, and we couldn’t agree more.
