More than two decades after she premiered the unforgettable look, Britney Spears’s red-carpet denim gown is still inspiring today’s fashion darlings.
Dua Lipa is the latest celebrity to take inspiration from Spears—who memorably defined a decade of fashion by turning up at the 2001 American Music Awards in a patchwork denim gown, along with her then-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, who matched in an all-denim suit.
Sharing pH๏τos of her new look on Instagram yesterday, Lipa wore a corset dress from Blumarine’s spring 2023 collection. The piece included studs all along the bust and down the front, a train, and a grommet belt bearing an ornate letter B. She paired the dress with more accessories that looked like they belong in the early aughts, like her crystal-embellished cross pendant choker.
For her glam, the “Don’t Start Now” singer wowed in glitter eye shadow, downturned winged eyeliner, a rose-tinted glossy lip, and a soft wavy ‘do.
Referring to her world Future Nostalgia Tour, Lipa captioned the look, “show 93 baby!!!!!!! 🥶”
Spears’s original outfit was the brainchild of styling duo Kurt and Bart, whom she worked closely with on many of her iconic Y2K looks at the time. Meanwhile, costume designer Steven Gerstein took on the task of creating Timberlake’s denim-on-denim suit.
Of designing the outfit, Gerstein told Jezebel in 2020, “It was just two kids, wanting to do something cool, and being super cute, matching. It was kind of like their prom. They had an idea, and we did what they wanted as opposed to the other way around. In this case, they were like, ‘We want to do this,’ and Kurt and Bart and I collaborated.”
