Forget the outfits for a sec: We can’t stop talking about Gigi Hadid’s hairstyle at the AMAs 2016. Gigi Hadid may have had six different looks (yes, six looks!) lined up for the American Music Awards (did you peep the cutout black gown and the Versace gown?), but the host had one constant: brushed-back curls that looked flawless with her every move.
“For her red-carpet look, Gigi was wearing a gorgeous white lace gown that had a Sєxy ’70s vibe, and we wanted her hair to reflect that, too,” says celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett. “We took inspiration from Lauren Hutton and went for brushed-back curls that would look glamorous but still effortless.”
The style may seem easy to achieve, but getting the look wasn’t a walk in the park. The look was a perfect marriage of volume and curls, and Scarlett nailed it. For volume, Scarlett used the GHD Air Hairdryer and the size 4 GHD Natural Bristle Radial Brush to blow her hair up and away from her face. Once it was dry, Scarlett back-combed the host’s hair with thickening spray. “Since we wanted big, voluminous curls, I used the GHD Soft Curl Iron to curl her hair,” he says. “The one-and-a-quarter-inch barrel creates nice, bouncy curls, which was exactly what we were going for.”
Once curled, Scarlett brushed her hair back to soften the look, which would complement whatever dress she wore. Next, he teased the top for a little extra volume and used the GHD Platinum Styler to touch it up and get rid of any flyaways. And just before she walked out the door, he set the look with hair spray.
Now if only we could get the Cavalli gown to with those waves.
